Best of Budapest, love it

Szamos was founded back in the 1930s, and has somehow managed to survive the chaos of the 20th century. Not many such cafes exist today in Budapest. I know of several that closed over the past twenty years, unable to cope with the challenges of capitalism. Szamos has done quite well, touting itself as a Hungarian brand. Most of their cakes really are quite good, and their Linzer is my personal favorite. Unfortunately their service leaves much to be desired. Today the waitress forgot part of our order, even after reminding her of the oversight. When preparing to leave my gf asked where the toilet is, and her response was: "we are closing soon." Jeez. And of course they add a 15% service charge to the bill. No wonder their cafe is at most half full on even sunny weekend afternoons - the locals know it's worth the effort to walk a few more blocks to "Cserpes Tejivó" across from Mom park - or my personal recommendation would be to hike up Sas hill to Auguszt Cukrászda. Of course I'm not basing my review on one experience, but I wanted to highlight something specific. Who knows, maybe they'll read it and make some changes. I certainly hope that they don't disappear like many of their peers.

Pastries are nice and tasty. But a price on a product was different from the price in their cash register and they didn't honor the price displayed despite the law.

Stuff should do a bit better work.

Favourite location in Buda, nice garden, delicious cakes and good coffee - and they even remember to serve water with the coffee!
