A gömböc az első ismert olyan homogén, konvex test, aminek 1 stabil és 1 instabil, vagyis összesen 2 egyensúlyi pontja van. A gömböc sajátos formája miatt mindig a stabil egyensúlyi pontjába billen vissza, függetlenül attól, hogyan tették le. Ennél kevesebb egyensúlyi helyzettel rendelkező test bizonyítottan nem létezik a világon. A kutatásból származó matematikai modellel egy kavics egyensúlyainak száma és helyzete alapján meghatározható annak eredeti mérete. Ez a számítás segített abban, hogy a Curiosity marsjáró felvételein látható kövekből a feltalálók a NASA-val közösen bizonyítsák, hogy a Marsot valaha jelentős méretű folyók szelték át. The sphere is the first known homogeneous, convex body with 1 stable and 1 unstable, i.e. a total of 2 equilibrium points. A body with less than this equilibrium position has proven to not exist in the world. The mathematical model from the research can be used to determine the original size of a gravel based on the number and position of its equilibria. This calculation helped the inventors, together with NASA, use the stones seen in the recordings of the Curiosity Martian to prove that Mars was once crossed by rivers of significant size. The shape of the pico drones at the drone research center at the University of Pennsylvania was also inspired by the sphere. Today, there are thousands of different spheres in more than 50 countries. The 4.5 meter high Corvin Sphere, made of more than 4 tons of stainless steel, commemorates this Hungarian invention. The largest, 2.5-meter-high sphere statue to date stood in the Hungarian pavilion of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
