A jánki egyházközség pontos alapítási ideje nem ismert, 1720 körül már létezhetett. Kezdetben fatemplomot építettek, amely Szent Mihály főangyal tiszteletére volt szentelve. Ennek a templomnak az egykori ikonosztázionjához tartozhatott a szép, íves profilú, jelenleg előkészítő oltárként használt asztal, az egykori védőszentre utaló, töredékes ószláv felirat ma is olvasható rajta. 1838-ban az új, szilárd anyagból építendő templom számára új telket kaptak, alapkövét 1843-ban tették le, de a munkálatok sokáig húzódtak, csak 1855-ben szentelték föl. Teljes ikonosztázionja ötven évvel később, 1905-ben készült a budapesti Rétay és Benedek Műintézetben, a középtengelyben olvasható felirat szerint. Az 1970-es árvíz idején a templomban is állt a víz. A helyreállítás majd’ egy évtizedig tartott. 1976-ban restaurálták az ikonosztáziont, három évvel később új főoltár készült – a baldachinos oltárt a bizánci előírásoknak megfelelően átalakították –, a falakra Pikó László festett képeket. Felszentelése 1980-ban történt meg. A templomot utoljára 2014-ben, jelentős pályázati támogatással újították fel.
