Győr volt az utolsó végvár az oszmán hódítás és az Európa kapujának tekintett Bécs között a 16. század utolsó évtizedében. A portyázó iszlám hadak Alsó-Ausztria településeit támadták, miután 1594-ben városunk is török kézre került. Győr 1598. március 29-i, keresztény hadak általi visszafoglalása véget vetett ennek a fenyegetettségnek, így Bécs és vele Nyugat-Európa végre fellélegezhetett.
Stotzingen báró, Alsó-Ausztria első helytartója Rudolf császár nevében kibocsátott rendelete emelte méltó helyére a Győriek vitézségéről: Egy hónappal a dicsőséges visszafoglalás után annak emlékére Alsó- és Felső-Ausztria minden községének útjain, szorosain, határain a kidőlt, vagy az idők viszontagsága által megviselt kereszteket, szobrokat két hó leforgása alatt megújítsák, kereszttel lássák el és akár a kőre, akár vaspléhre könnyen olvasható, fekete betűkkel véssék vagy írják reá ez emléksorokat:
„Sag Gott, dem Herrn, Lob und Dank,
dass Raab wieder kommen in dér Christen Hand“
vagyis
Mondj Istennek dicséretet, hálát,
hogy visszaadta nekünk Győr várát.

Győr was the last border fortress between the Ottoman conquest and Vienna, considered the gateway to Europe in the last decade of the 16th century. The raiding Islamic armies attacked the settlements of Lower Austria after our city fell into Turkish hands in 1594.
