Komárom

The settlement of just 20,000 is by no means an ordinary small town. From the outset, its structure is not normal either, as it is located in a strip at least 15 km long along the banks of the Danube. In fact, it is unnecessary to appreciate itself, as the larger Komárom and the charming old town are located on the Slovak bank of the Danube, on the Hungarian side "only" the new town built since the 1900s, so the visitor should not look for old town or bustling life. It is not very exciting for young people either, as it is hardly a fun place. However, it is ideal for the smaller ones, because in addition to the calmer environment, 6 primary schools and the same number of high schools await the students. Why do I still give it 4 stars? .. The city, although it has many flaws, still e.g. a real ace in terms of job opportunities. Its huge industrial park and plenty of factories attract people from all corners of the country. There is immediately a flaw associated with this, as this relative wealth is not very visible in the cityscape. The carpeted district looks distinctly run-down, but the downtown area isn’t really memorable either. Nevertheless, it is worth visiting the city, because even if the city does not offer much, its surroundings are even more so. Just a few interesting things: it is no joke that Komárom is a city of fortresses, there are two smaller (Igmándi and Csillag) and a huge fortress on the outskirts of the city center (Monostori), the others are on the Slovak side. The monastery fortress does not appear to man on the outside either, because, unlike the castles, it was built to be invisible to enemy armies, but the part of the Danube on the bank of the river suggests a definite force with its gloomy, huge walls. Concerts, car meetings and other military or theatrical events are regular in the courtyard of the fort. The fort's many kilometers of bunker systems are walkable, a real experience. Another such attraction is the monastery's romantic Danube bank. It has practically no built up except for a short free beach area, it has a real feeling of how you can roam the pebble and quiet beach for hours. Equally a real natural experience is the peninsula, which used to be an orchard, so wild apples, pears and plums can still be picked freely today, and even the remains of an ancient Roman road can be found at its entrance. Komárom was a significant Roman border town and legionary camp called Brigetio in ancient times, to this day Roman stone coffins are scattered in many parts of the city, but no other memory refers to the glorious past. Unless, of course, we visit the Klapka Museum, as all the memories we find can be seen here. There are relatively few hotels in the city, but if you need cheap accommodation for a few days trip, I can recommend the Komárom College, located in the Molaj housing estate on the outskirts of the Szőnyi district. True from the outside it is quite retro, but the kind and attentive staff helps a lot. What is a big advantage of the city is that it is an approach junction with 3 bridges, by train Budapest and Vienna are an hour, Győr 20 minutes. However, the real Komárom can only be really known if we consider the two sides of the river bank as one city! I can recommend the city, a few days offers plenty of attractions.
