Lake Balaton (nicknamed “the Hungarian Sea”) is a Hungarian lake in Transdanubia, the largest lake in Central Europe and a defining element of Hungary's hydrography. Its easily warming, shallow water makes it excellent for swimming and sports, its wildlife is extremely rich, and the landscape is unique in many ways with its varied volcanic cones. Geologically, like Lake Venice, it is a shallow-water trench of tectonic origin. It is 77 km long, its smallest width at Tihany is 1.5 km, its largest is 12.7 km between Balatonvilágos and Balatonalmádi, [6] its average width is 7.7 km, and its surface is 600 km². Its deepest point in the deepest ditch of the Tihany Strait is the so-called “Tihany Fountain”, where the lake bed is 11-12.5 meters deep. According to another source, the depth of the well is 10.67 meters. It is about 100-150 meters east of the Szántód-Tihany ferry route and about 300 meters from the coast. The eastern basin of the 59,800-hectare wetland is separated from the rest of the lake by the Tihany Peninsula. It is shallower than the south coast. On its northern side is the Badacsony wine region and the Tapolca basin, with its characteristic volcanic witness mountains. In addition to Lake Balaton and its surroundings, it is the most visited tourist area in the country, in 2004 it also won the title of Our Heritage - The Treasure of Somogy. There are spas and thermal springs in the area. Every year, three major mass sports events related to the lake are organized, the Kékszalag International Sailing Competition, the Révfülöp-Balatonboglár cross-country swimming competition across Lake Balaton, and most recently the Fonyód-Badacsony-Fonyód route with any hand-operated watercraft.
