★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Magyar László Afrika-kutató Magyar Imre öttömösi földbirtokos törvénytelen fia volt. Az elemi iskolát Dunaföldváron, a gimnáziumot Szabadkán és Kalocsán járta, a legfelső osztályt (poetica) pedig a pesti piaristáknál fejezte be (Horváth László néven). 1842-ben Fiuméba ment, ahol a tengerészeti iskolát elvégezve 1843-ban tengerészkadét lett, és egy osztrák postahajón eljutott Brazíliába.
Különböző hajókon szolgálva bejárta a Karib-tengert. Főleg rabszolgaszállító hajókon szolgált Madagaszkártól a Nyugat-indiai szigeteken át Havannáig. 1845-ben La Plata állam flottahadnagya lett La Plata és Uruguay háborújában. Dél-Amerika belsejébe tervezett felfedező utat, és ehhez a Magyar Tudós Társaságtól kért anyagi támogatást. Mivel ezt nem kapta meg, Dél-Amerika helyett Afrikát vette célba.
László Magyar was an illegitimate son of the landowner Imre Magyar from Öttömös, Africa. He attended elementary school in Dunaföldvár, grammar school in Subotica and Kalocsa, and completed the upper class (poetica) at Pest Piarist (under the name of László Horváth). He went to Rijeka in 1842, where he graduated from the Naval School in 1843 and sailed to Brazil on an Austrian post.
He traveled across the Caribbean serving on various ships. Served mainly on slave ships from Madagascar through the West Indian Islands to Havana. In 1845 he became Lieutenant of the State of La Plata in the War of La Plata and Uruguay. He planned an exploratory trip inside South America and requested financial support from the Hungarian Scientist Society. Since he did not receive this, he targeted Africa instead of South America.
