★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A bíboros 1949. és 1954. között a József utca és a Tolnay Lajos utca sarkán álló akkori ÁVH-s börtönben raboskodott, ezért állították fel 2017-ben itt a szobrát. Az 1956-os forradalom alatt kiszabadították, a szabadságharc leverése után az Egyesült Államok budapesti nagykövetségére menekült. A követségen tartózkodott 1971-ig, akkor elhagyhatta az országot és Bécsbe költözött. Ott halt meg 1975-ben.
Between 1949 and 1954, the cardinal was imprisoned in the then ÁVH prison on the corner of József utca and Tolnay Lajos utca, so his statue was erected here in 2017. He was released during the 1956 revolution and fled to the US Embassy in Budapest after the defeat of the War of Independence. He stayed at the embassy until 1971, when he was able to leave the country and move to Vienna. He died there in 1975.
