Itt járt a nagy (vagyis az igazi, az első) Napóleon 1809-ben. A volt vármegyeháza tekintélyes oszlopos masszívja uralja a Fő utca képét, zászlók hirdetik, hogy még ma is középület (városháza). Ebben az épületben hatalmas szellemi iszapbirkózás zajlott. 1809. június 2-án a franciák megszállták a várost. Augusztus 12-e és szeptember 27-e között itt gyürkőzött egymásnak korának két gigásza, Metternich herceg az osztrák és Champagny francia külügy-ész, hogy országuk számára kedvező békét hozzanak tető alá. Közben nem mulasztottak el bulit rendezni a 40 éves Napóleon tiszteletére. 1956. október 26-án, ezen a gyászos napon pedig itt alakult meg a Magyar Nemzeti Tanács. Az épület homlokzatán Moson kétfarkú oroszlánjai hirdetik, lehet, hogy ma már nincs különálló Moson vármegye, de megmaradt emlékezete. Amíg ezek a délceg oroszlánok ott ágaskodnak és lesz, aki tudja, hogy mit szimbolizálnak, meg is marad. I now appreciate it from a tourist point of view!
