★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you're in Budapest and want to have a local experience, then you should try the Gyermekvasut or Children's Railway. It's an old Soviet hold over, but well worth your time. The railway is partially operated by Hungarian children. They take and check tickets, help at the stations and gift shops and help with the train itself. The children are always pleasant and many of them speak enough English to help you out, if you're a foreigner like me. They have to learn it in school and are usually very happy to practice. You do need to buy a ticket, usually about 1000 HUF or $3 for adults. The ride itself is about 30 minutes from end to end and takes you through the Hungarian hillside. A very pleasant time.
