A tulajdonos gróf Festetics Ferenc borzasztó módon eladósodott , s mire a kastély 1796-ban lakható állapotba került, már meg is kellett válnia tőle. Somogyi János vette meg a kastélyt. Ekkor építették a kastély főhomlokzati oldalán a családi címert és a faragott erkélyt is. A barokk kastélyt ebben az időben még zsindelytető borította. A beltérben az ebédlő két cserépkályhája felett két szobor, egy férfi, és egy női alak kapott” alsó fűtést”. Somogyi János alkancellár nevéhez fűződik az angol tájképnek megfelelő park kialakítása is. Somogyi János idejében a kastély uradalmában selyemhernyó tenyésztéssel foglalkoztatták az „unatkozó” környékbeli lakosokat.
