"1860-ban ükapánk, Steer József Hoffer nevű szomszédjával a Felvidékre ment há-
zaik tetőszerkezetéhez faanyagot vásárolni. A kor szokásának megfelelően a Vágon és a Dunán úsztatták le a faanyagot. A tutajos legények a kialkudott viteldíjon felül el akarták venni a maradék pénzüket. Hoffer odaadta, a mi ősünk nem, ezért egy szálfára ültetve vízbe lökték. Mivel úszni nem tudott, nagyon megrémült, és megfogadta, ha túléli, akkor egy emlékkeresztet állíttat hálából. Miután a pénzét átadta, visszavették a tutajra, így életben maradt, természetesen a keresztet (képtartóoszlopot) felállíttatta."
