Jó, hogy nem vakolták simára a falazatát, így legalább el tud révedni az ember, s kissé a múltba képzelni magát. A torony sisakja is telitalálat, igazán látványos kalapja a falaknak. A városban korán tért hódított a reformáció, 1587-ben lelkészt tartottak és használták a régi kőtemplomot annak minden gazdaságával, dézsmájával és malom-vámjával együtt. Az 1595-ös jelentés református templomáról szól. A vár és a hozzá tartozó nagy uradalom előbb Bocskai István, később Bethlen Gábor fejedelmek kezébe került. 1653-ban templomot építettek, de azt 1895-ben lebontották. Jelenlegi templomát 1897-ben építették a régi templom helyére. A torony nélküli neogótikus templom nyugati homlokzata oromfalas, előtte kis bejárati előcsarnok van. A belső mennyezete sík, vakolt. A templom délnyugati sarka előtt áll a középkori, 8×8 méteres alapterületű, három emeletes 23 m magas, kőből készült harangtorony. Ez a régi szendrői alsó vár egyik bástyatornyának 1520 körüli átalakításából jött létre. Tornácos fa toronysisakja 1786-ban készült. A torony 13 méter magas kőfala és 10 méter magas sisakja méltóságteljes látvány. Egyes vélemények szerint a torony még a tatárjárás (1241) után készülhetett, de 1786-ig a szendrői várhoz tartozott.
