After the siege of Vienna in 1683, the Christian army that liberated Vienna with a momentum - still that year - along the Danube, led by King John Sobiesky of Poland, also recaptured Esztergom from the Turks. The following year they also tried to recapture Buda, then unsuccessfully. In 1685, the Turks tried to re-occupy Esztergom, as from a military point of view, this castle was the gateway to Buda, as at that time the Danube was the transport route for the larger armies. It was favorable to the Turks that the Christian armies were just below Archbishop's Palace to recapture that castle. However, under the leadership of Charles of Lorraine, half of the troops in Archbishop's march set out to help the defenders of Esztergom, and here, in this place, they defeated a larger number of Turkish forces. Thus, Esztergom was liberated from the siege ring, and a year later another attempt to recapture Buda could begin, which was now crowned with success. The Battle of Tát in 1685 is not in the public consciousness, although if the Turks regained Esztergom again, Müzzin would still invite the townspeople to prayer in Buda to this day. The memorial site draws attention to these events.
