Obviously, this info will not be current. The lookout is closed for maintenance. It was partly a disappointment to deal with it anyway. The place is suitable for wild camping anyway and that was our primary goal. By car, the road is quite adventurous, I wouldn’t necessarily have gone by car in the rain.

Hármashegy, an area about 17 km from the county seat of Hajdú-Bihar, is well known to Debrecen residents and hikers. It got its name from the wind-shaped sand dunes that towered so high that people already called them mountains. The highest point of the area is Hármashegy, which rises 151 meters above sea level. The Hármashegy Recreation Center is one of the most important recreation areas of the Erdőspuszta in Debrecen. Its beauty is the Hármashegyi lookout tower, from which a wonderful sight unfolds before the eyes of the forest walker. Not only the many smaller settlements in the area and the county seat of Hajdúság, but also the “neighboring castle” in clear weather, Oradea, which is more than fifty kilometers away, are well visible. The Hármashegy lookout tower was built in the early 1980s, in accordance with the technical standards of the time. The 14-meter-high facility has already been overgrown by the surrounding trees, so the 25-meter-high lookout was built in 2014. The building rises impossibly over the surrounding pine forest. Its four curved and nine octagonal straight columns were made of wood. Seven steps lead up to the covered observation deck, which is almost 19 meters high. Not only does the lookout house hold unique experiences, but also the ascent leading to the facility. In the absence of real mountains, the locals and tourists from Debrecen go sledding in winter. The lookout can be visited free of charge at your own risk.
