Make sure you have money on you cause they will find a reason not to let you in even when your a romanian citizen in the european union...personal experience!!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Hungarian crossing guard seemed to have a problem with my car registration being in a hard plastic document holder attached to my keys(it was a rental car)-it was not a problem going into Romania. They told me to go to the interrogation area parking lot. There were 3 other cars there, all with the Russian plates. Just go with it-What were the 3
Russians and an American doing in the Hungarian interrogation room? Joking aside, he wanted me to break it open!!!! I told him to call Avis car rental company if he thinks that I stole this car. He gave up on the idea, and let me go, but my Russian friends were still being interrogated as I was leaving.
One more thing, do not buy your vignette(the highway pass) at the first red booth on the right. There is this shady looking guy in there that will sell it to you for a lot more than other places further down the road. Just buy it on the next gas station.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ They are very lax, and don't even look at your ID's, but when a lot of people come home, like orthodox Easter and Christmas, they check your ID at the computer, your car's trunk and registration papers. At least they don't search your bags. If this is the only way safety can be guaranteed, then be it. But they should do it every day, not only on holidays. If this is not really necessary, then let Romania be a Schengen member already.
