Már első tanára, Mayr Aurél munkásságával megindult a szanszkrit nyelv oktatása, s kiteljesedett Schmidt József alatt, aki több könyvet és fordítást közölt a klasszikus indiai kultúrával kapcsolatban. A két világháború között a tanszék betöltetlen maradt. A második világháború után 1952-ben, Harmatta János és Töttössy Csaba kinevezésével indult újra a munka, 1956-ban pedig a tanszék megbízást kapott az indológia szak oktatására. A hangsúly a kezdeti időszakban elsősorban a szanszkrit filológia oktatásán volt. Töttössy Csaba professzor tanítványai nemzetközileg elismert szakemberei a klasszikus indológia egy-egy területének. Ezen arculat egészült ki Négyesi Mária révén, aki a tanszék jelenlegi vezetője, a hindí nyelv magas szintű oktatásával, a modern India értő megismertetésével. A tanszék hazánkban egyedüliként várja mindazon érdeklődőket, akik mély ismereteket kívánnak szerezni az indiai irodalom, történelem és művészetek területén a klasszikus szanszkrit és a modern Indiát összekötő hindí nyelv elsajátításán keresztül. A tanszék hallgatóit munkájukban nemzetközi ösztöndíj lehetőségekkel támogatja. DEPARTMENT OF INDOEUROPE LINGUISTICS Our department was established in 1873 to study the history of Indo-European languages. His first teacher, Aurél Mayr, began teaching Sanskrit and completed under József Schmidt, who published several books and translations on classical Indian culture. Between the two world wars the department remained vacant. After World War II, the work resumed in 1952 with the appointment of János Harmatta and Csaba Töttössy, and in 1956 the department was commissioned to teach the Indology program. The emphasis in the early period was mainly on the teaching of Sanskrit philology. Professor Csaba Töttössy's students are internationally recognized experts in the fields of classical indology. This image was complemented by the Fourth Lady, who is the current head of the department, with a high level of education in Hindi and an understanding of modern India. The department is the only one in our country who is interested in all those who are interested in acquiring a deep knowledge of Indian literature, history and arts through the study of Hindi, a classical Sanskrit and modern Indian language. The students of the department are supported by international scholarships in their work.
