Az iskola alagsora és földszintje 1778-ban, Mária Terézia osztrák császárnő támogatásával épült. Előbb 1821-ben, majd 1893-ban bővítették, jelenlegi formáját 1905-ben nyerte el. Díszes kapuján a latin felirat jelentése: "A haza ifjúságának. Hazafiságának és tudományának. Készítette Mária Terézia császárnő. 1778." Az intézményből nagynevű költők, írók, művészek egész sora került ki: Ányos Pál, Batsányi János, Endrődi Sándor költők, vagy a legkiválóbb nyelvészek egyike, Simonyi Zsigmond, de itt tanultak a Cholnoky fivérek, Óvári Ferenc, Veszprém kultúrpolitikusa, a Balaton-kultusz megalapítója, Csikász Imre szobrászművész, Zichy Mihály festőművész,Kerényi György zenepedagógus, Zámbó István karnagy és Pesovár Ernő európai hírű néprajztudós, Freund Tamás Bolyai-díjas agykutató, valamint a volt köztársasági elnök, Mádl Ferenc is. Az iskola hat püspököt és egy bíborost adott a Római Katolikus Egyháznak. Később itt működött a Lovassy gimnázium, majd a Közgazdasági szakközépiskola.

The basement and ground floor of the school were built in 1778 with the support of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. It was first expanded in 1821 and then in 1893, gaining its current form in 1905. At its ornate gate, the Latin inscription means, "To the youth of the homeland. To its patriotism and science. Made by Empress Maria Theresa. 1778." A number of well-known poets, writers and artists came out of the institution: Pál Ányos, János Batsányi, Sándor Endrődi, or one of the most excellent linguists, Zsigmond Simonyi, but the Cholnoky brothers, Ferenc Óvári, the cultural politician of Veszprém, , Sculptor Imre Csikász, painter Mihály Zichy, music teacher György Kerényi, conductor István Zámbó and Ernő Pesovár European renowned ethnographer, Tamás Freund Bolyai Prize-winning brain researcher, and former President Ferenc Mádl. The school gave six bishops and a cardinal to the Roman Catholic Church. Later, the Lovassy Grammar School and then the Secondary School of Economics operated here.
