A település és a plébánia története egészen az Árpádok koráig vezethető vissza. A szentgotthárdi cisztercita kolostor alapításakor /1183-ban/ Ivánc a Miskolc nembeli Domokos báné volt. Fia Bors ispán IV. Béla királyra hagyta. Az első írásos adat az első ivánci templomról az 1220-as évek elején, valamikor az Aranybulla kiadásának idejéből származik, egy birtokeladási okiratban. Ez a szent Márton-templom a XIII. század végére a feltételezések szerint kicsinek bizonyult vagy romossá vált, ezért az Ajakos család új templomot építtetett valamikor az 1200-as évek végén, az 1300-as évek elején, amit Szent Miklós tiszteletére szenteltek fel. Ennek a templomnak a megújítása 1714-ben történt, de mivel egyre romlott az állapota és 1909-re a repedések miatt veszélyessé vált, 1910-ben lebontották. Az akkori esperes-plébános – Horváth József – 1910. január 19-én 31. számú felterjesztésében engedélyt kért, hogy hétköznapokon a templom lebontása és az új megépítésének ideje alatt a plébánia egyik szobájában misézhessen. A körmendi főszolgabíró 1911. szeptember 16-án kelt véghatározatában engedélyt adott gróf Sigray Antalnak a becsatolt tervek szerint a templom építésére. Így épült meg a mai háromhajós, magyaros szecessziós, székely elemekkel díszített templom, amely alatt azonos nagyságú altemplom van és melyet Mikes János szombathelyi megyéspüspök szentelt fel 1914. június 13-án. A templom kegyura, gróf Sigray Antal adta az építéshez szükséges anyagot, fizette a mesterembereket, a dolgos kezeket pedig a plébánia hívei adták. A templom tervezője Hendrich Antal műépítész volt, aki alapul vette a Kós Károly tervezte zebegényi templomot. A templom főhomlokzatán a Sigray család címere látható jelmondatukkal: Candore et fidelitate – buzgósággal és hűséggel. A templomnak két harangja van: A 360 kg-os nagyharangot Seltenhofer Frigyes fiai harangöntő gyárában, Sopronban öntötték 1929-ben, felirata: "Zengő szavad zúgjon hegyen-völgyön át.
