Nagyhegyesi Crater Lake "Only one kilometer from Hajdúszoboszló is one of the wonders of Hajdú-Bihar county, the Crater Lake of Nagyhegyes. Below the ground level of the whole area of ​​Nagyhegyes, there is a continuous gas field, one below the other, at a great depth, which was discovered in 1958 and the extraction began almost immediately. The lake was formed on the morning of August 24, 1961, at three-quarters of six o'clock, as a result of a detonation following a spontaneous gas eruption at the Hajdúszoboszló-36 gas well. The erupting gas ignited, burning with a hundred-meter flame, which was also visible from Debrecen, 20 kilometers away. The gas burned for days, which was eventually carried by the ejected mud. Behind the huge flame curtain, a crater formed, which quickly engulfed the 45-meter-high rig along with the machines. At the site of the eruption, a crater lake more than 200 meters in diameter and very deep was formed - in a 1963 survey, divers were able to descend to 47 meters in the muddy bed - bounded by a 17-meter-high ridge formed by the eruption's sediments. its humid microclimate is significantly different from that of the surrounding fields. The environment and the inhabitants of Nagyhegyes still preserve the environment. Due to its location, the Crater Lake in Nagyhegyes is also considered to be the only Hungarian oasis.
