The building is relatively renovated but the exhibition itself is a bit poor. There is little explanation. If anyone wants to get to know the life of a writer from here, forget it.

Beautifully restored place, stars of Eger, Gárdonyi, what else is needed? ?

Fifty meters from the northern entrance of the castle, on the other side of the road, we find the house of one of the most famous Hungarian writers. Tickets can be purchased both at the memorial house and at the ticket office of the castle, but only cash is accepted at the museum! The memorial house consists of three rooms, from a small foyer to the right the writer's study to the left the bedroom opens with original furniture and personal items. "After 1891, Gárdonyi, a journalist in Budapest, became disillusioned with the social life of the capital and sought a place to live in the countryside. The Géza Gárdonyi Memorial House in Eger was established in the writer's former residence, where the writer lived and worked between 1897 and 1922. Here he wrote his novels that brought him immortality, but the most prominent of all is the well-known Star of Eger, completed in 1901, which weaves his plot around the world-famous Turkish siege of 1552. Even today, in a memorial house that is loud from children's whims, almost every piece of furniture has remained in its original place. The carved desks and bookcases, Gárdonyi's study and bedroom, his book collection of nearly ten thousand pieces and his cryptographic notes help to imagine the writer's everyday life. Gárdonyi's love was, at first sight, the ruined property that was still on the edge of the city, which he gradually transformed according to his own needs. The writer loved silence and solitude, hence his nickname: the hermit of Eger, so he soon bought the vineyard behind the house, where he built a new house for his family, and he was left alone in the old cottage. One of the special features of the writer’s house is the glass roof of the study. It is located directly above the desk and served the purpose of allowing Géza Gárdonyi to always work in even, filtered light when he withdrew all doors and windows from the outside world. The writer lived here for twenty-five years, from the summer of 1897 until his death on October 30, 1922. Another interesting feature of the memorial house is the dulcimer near the entrance, which Dankó Pista, who often visited Gárdonyi, left as a pledge with Gárdonyi, who borrowed money to heal in Sanremo, and which he could no longer trigger due to the early death of the famous musician of the time. Dear visitor, whether you have read the stars of Eger, only seen it in a movie, or perhaps heard about it in school hours, believe me you will deprive yourself of an experience of a lifetime if you miss this small museum with a rare spirit. "

The memorial house is in relatively good condition and the garden is well maintained. The lady we bought the ticket from was pretty bored, she wasn't very happy to answer the question. Here, too, there was a good building in the back garden, it could have been a service house, but the roof was already torn. Too bad they are left ruined in such a beautiful place. This is also typical. It is only renovated that is conspicuous to make everything look okay.
