為了讓孩子們學會獨立,他創立屬於孩子的共和國,Gaudiopolis(意思是City of Joy),由孩子自行運作。
In memory of Gabor Sztehlo. The priest provided asylum and protected more than 900 children from persecution by the Nazis and the Communist Party during World War II, so the statue was held by the children. To help children learn to be independent, he founded the Republic of Children, Gaudiopolis (meaning City of Joy), which was run by the children themselves.

In September 1945, almost 800 children rescued by Stelo created a children's republic in the PAKS orphanage. Children themselves chose their "government", had their own "constitution" and other "laws". To become a "citizen of the republic" one had to be over 9 years old. Children studied professions and worked. Cultural life flourished. They paid in Gapo dollars. Gaudiopolis existed solely thanks to the support of the International Red Cross, without receiving funding from either the state or the church. It existed until 1950.

A sculpture of pastor Gábor Sztehlo, within the sculpture you can see a small child being carried or sheltered within the boxy frame of Sztehlo. Gábor Sztehlo provided shelter for children and saved hundreds of Jewish people from Nazi and Hungarian Fascist persecution during World War II. After WW2 he turned a shelter for Jewish, underprivileged, abandoned and orphaned children into "Gaudiopolis" a republic with its own currency, newspaper and constitution created and amended by the children themselves.
