Visegrád 1009 évét tartja a város keletkezési dátumának.
Az adománylevélben Vyssegradiensis civitas-nak nevezték a Sibrik dombon levő települést. Korábban Konstantin alatt a IV században a Pona Navata római erődítmény állt itt, melynek helyére épült az ispáni vár az út másik oldalán pedig a templom.
2009-ben ünnepelték a város fennállásának ezredik évét, mely alkalomból avatták fel a Szent György Lovagrend által adományozott emlékművet 2009. augusztus 20-án.
