Budapest's depths
The caves of Buda started to form about 15-20 million years ago owing to the upflowing hot and the percolating cold karst waters among the carbonate rocks – limestone and dolomite – building up the majority of Buda Hills. Nevertheless, in lieu of natural entrances, their existence remained unknown even in the 19th century. Parts of the cave system was discovered during mine exploitation, foundation digging and sewage construction starting from the early 20th century. Nowadays we know of nearly 60 kilometres of cave system in the Buda Hills and the explorations have not finished!
