Évszázadokon át folyamatosan építették, bővítettek a templomot, így a középkori Magyarország legnagyobb katedrálisa volt. Először 1200 körül Imre király toldotta meg nyugat felől az általa felújított és beboltozott régi bazilika hosszházát kora gótikus stílusban. Ennek a bővítménynek a közepén építette fel saját síremlékét. A lerombolt templomnak csak alapfalai maradtak meg. A rom templom Dobó István Vármúzeum romkertjében .
