A pályázatot Böhm Henrik és Hegedűs Ármin építészpáros pályázata nyerte, a kivitelezést egy helyi építési vállalkozó, Schreiber Gyula végezte. Az épület - amely a századforduló eklektikus-szecessziós irányzatának egyik legkiemelkedőbb alkotása - 1900 nyarára készült el, az eredeti tervekhez képest kis módosítással. Időközben a járásbíróságot, vele a börtönt is ide költöztették és a földszinti helyiségeket üzleteknek adták ki. A város törvényhatósági jogait hivatott jelképezni a városháza oromzatának központi helyén a kor egyik emberideáljának, Roland lovagnak a szobra. Az 1993 óta helyi védelem alatt álló épület 1999-ben teljesen felújították. In Újpest, founded in 1840, a decision was made in 1895 to build a two-storey town hall on Szent István Square. In July 1895, Count Sándor Károlyi relinquished ownership of Szent István tér. The tender was won by the tender of architects Henrik Böhm and Ármin Hegedűs, and the construction was carried out by a local construction contractor, Gyula Schreiber. The building, one of the most outstanding works of the eclectic-Art Nouveau trend of the turn of the century, was completed by the summer of 1900, with a slight modification compared to the original plans. In the meantime, the district court, with it the prison, was moved here and the ground floor premises were given out to shops. The statue of one of the human ideals of the age, knight Roland, is meant to symbolize the legislative rights of the city in the central place of the gable of the town hall. The building, which has been under local protection since 1993, was completely renovated in 1999.
