Margaret Terrace Restaurant

It should have been a warning sign when we entered this „bistro“ at one of the tourist hotspots of Budapest at noon to have lunch and it was nearly empty. We sat down anyway and the first thing you notice is that the staff hand you the menu and then breathe down your neck straight away for an order. First I ordered Goulash and was told they were out. Told them I needed another minute to look at the menu-as yet again they were breathing down my neck. I then ordered the goulash soup (having previously been told they only had Goulash soup and broccoli soup). 2min later the waiter came back saying they were out. Eventually I ordered the Paprika chicken. After we were brought 2 wrong meals, our food came after not too long a wait (microwaves seem to work here). The sauce to the chicken apparently came from a can or something. It had not taste whatsoever-the spaetzle were undercooked. On top of that they have the boldness to charge for the toilet. Update: when we got the bill they wanted to charge us for sides that we weren’t asked we wanted and just assumed they were part of the dish (otherwise the dish would be a badly cooked piece of chicken and a little tasteless sauce). When we refused to pay for that-as we weren’t asked we wanted these “extras” the 2 waiters got cocky and rude with us. Said things like “you ate them, no?”. When we kept refusing they rolled their eyes took it off and practically flung the bill back on the table. Bottom line: check the bill and refuse to pay any items you didn’t order. UPDATE #2: it does not say anywhere on the menu that sides are not included in a dish. Yes-in the country I’m from you pay for something you eat-but in my country a piece of chicken with sauce is not considered a full meal, which is why I did not question the (unordered!) side on the plate. I assumed it was part of the dish-as this was also the case in any restaurant in Budapest I ate at. I cannot say it any clearer: I did not order “paprika chicken and a side of dumplings” I ordered paprika chicken and was handed a plate with paprika chicken and dumplings on it. Even if it said “sides are paid separately” on the menu (which it does not) I still didn’t order them and wasn’t asked either, so according to the restaurant’s logic I should have been given a plate of chicken and sauce! (Apart from that you as the owner might want to read properly-I said I ordered goulash first-then goulash soup, because when we entered the restaurant and were handed the menus the waiter told us straight up they only had the 2 soups).

Large place with few guests. Helpful but uncommitted staff. Good with childrens menu but one out of two dishes was sold out. Coleslaw for the hamburger also turned out to be sold out, but that information only came to late at the serving. The food was good though so I give three stars after all.

Horrible waiters; had to ask 5 people to order. Horrible disgusting food. STAY AWAY!

Nice location, surprisingly disappointing food. Kitchen reminiscent of the doubtful quality of 1980's Hungarian cuisine with basic cooking mistakes. If you choose to eat here, please stick to simple staple dishes, or else be prepared for an unwelcome surprise. Sorry to post such a review, and hope that management will make consistent efforts to improve the place.

Ordered fish & chips... Got fish fingers and chips... For over 3k forints... Their 'tejfölös uborkasaláta' (pickled cucumber with sour cream) was terrible and they didn't have any sour cream. The waiter was nice and the food arrived quickly (although I wouldn't expect it to be slow if they are just trying frozen food)

I liked the place. The food was good, cheap beer and a good dessert.

Some meals or drinks from the menu were not available. I missed a jug of water and lemon or something. Although the restaurant was almost empty, I waited for a long time for food. Some chairs were wet and soaked with rain. ALL cutlery was more or less dirty! There was no soap in the toilets and the disinfection containers were empty!

We were 4 adults and 1 toddler. We ordered 3 cheseburger, 1 hamburger for my toddler and breaded pork. Honestly the meat on the burger was delicious! The bread is alot bigger than the meat but its fried so its okay. The pork is actually quite good. The price is okay, yes of course it’s more pricey because it’s in the island but not super expensive. Regarding the waiter, I dont know who he was but he was quick, nice, good at responding our request, and when I asked about how to get us a taxi on the island, he used his 5 minutes time only to call his friends and ask his colleague because he didnt know, meaning: wow!!! Thanks for the attention! I only wanted to ask if the taxi can get in or not but he tried even to get us the taxi ????. Too bad the place seems like nobody care to make it nicer. So I am not surprised if people’s first impression was “this place look dead”. It needs to re-decorated to look more clean and maybe family friendly :)
