Very nice theater with good acoustics. We can see very interesting and elegant interior design solutions here. An outstanding part of the work of Joseph Haydn, who was promoted to be the first conductor in 1766, includes operas written here, music for various plays and the Baroness of the Duke. The feasts and feasts of the aristocracy could not miss the puppet operettas, the marionette pieces, for which the duke built a separate theater building. The Marionette Theater is located on the eastern side of the southern large park, its interior is decorated with stucco mimics of murals and glittering water grottoes rich in pebbles, shells, snails and wall-painted landscapes. In 1773, at the time of Mary Theresa's hospitality, it was opened by Haydn's Philemon and Baucis. As a versatile master of puppetry we find in the sources the name of Joseph Carl von Pauersbach, who, besides creating exceptional stage machinery and writing pieces for puppetry, is also referred to as the prince's home poet. (Pauersbach left the Duke's court in 1778 and served in the Russian Tsar.) The Marionette Theater was transformed into a multi-storey granary in the 19th century, when its interior decorations were completely destroyed. The exterior facade of the building was rebuilt in May 2013 with its original Baroque appearance. Like in Haydn's time, the Marionette Theater functions as a concert and performance hall, hosting most of the Concerts of the Esterals. The refurbishment was well done, but its approach (roads, lighting, information boards, marking of the theater parking lot, etc.) would require more care.
