Do not expect what is described in the guides. It is expensive compared to the average price of other restaurants and the taste does not correspond to this price !

80% of the restaurants in Hungary I experienced some kind of rip off. The Opera cafe is one of them. I ordered a glass of wine and a beer. The menu states the beer is 500ml, the waiter poured a 330 ml beer, when I noticed he said thats an old menu. But he charged the same price as the 500ml. Just a bit dodgy.

I don't quite understand the several complaints raised here. This is an all day cafe restaurant that is above average - though not exceptional - in almost all regards. My latte macchiato and eszterhazy cake were very nice. The cafe is exceptional in at least one regard - its location inside the famous opera house on the prestigious Andrassy Avenue. Its interior is lofty with beautiful vaulted ceilings. It should not be a surprise that it is priced accordingly. In fact, if you compare it with the most famous grand cafés in Budapest, it seems quite affordable.

I actually didn't visit the opera cafe as a guest. I was participating in a guided tour on May the 8th 2022 at 16.30. We made a stop in the cafe area where the guide described the paintings in the room (the guide was phantastic by the way, as was the building). While our guide was speaking and we were trying to listen, some of the café employees made an unbelievable noise, which lasted for the whole duration of our presence in the room. Not only where they talking , laughing and mocking us (they mimicked us staring at the ceiling to observe the paintings), they even made noise cleaning the coffee machine although there weren't any customers to be served. We could hardly understand our guide although she raised her voice and we moved to the next room, the "smoking room" which is next to the café. How strange, the noise from the café stopped as soon as we left. I am writing this, as I felt deeply insulted by this behaviour. I am still trying to understand if the target was us, the tourists, or our guide who happened to be non-hungarian. I am sure that this is not the general attitude of the opera towards tourists, and I am writing this as I want to make the management aware of the incident. This is why I am precise about the date and time.
