Gondolom nem csak nekem esik nehezemre, hogy elsőre belelássam az éppen Sárvárra, a vár bejáratához érkező protestáns tudóst, aki a prédikátorok jellegzetes köpenyét és süvegét viseli; illetve hogy a lábánál papíros ívek és a könyvnyomtatás eszközei láthatók.
Sylvester János 1504 körül Szinérváralján született, a krakkói és a wittenbergi egyetemen tanult. 1534-ben jött Sárvárra. Nádasdy Tamás szolgálatába állva kezdte el az Újtestamentum magyarra fordítását. 1537-ben nyomdát alapított. Ő adta ki az első, teljes egészében magyar nyelven írott könyvet, ami 1541-ben jelent meg. Munkája sok küszködéssel és kevés sikerrel járt. Még ugyabban az évben el is hagyta Sárvárt. Gógánfán gazdálkodott, majd a bécsi egyetemen a héber nyelv tanára lett. 1552-ben halt meg.

János Sylvester was born around 1504 in Szinérváralja, studied at the University of Krakow and Wittenberg. He came to Sarvar in 1534. Tamas Nádasdy started working on translating the New Testament into Hungarian. In 1537 he founded a printing house. He published the first book, written entirely in Hungarian, published in 1541. His work has been a lot of struggle and little success. He left Sárvár even in the same year. He was a farmer in Goganfé, then became a teacher of Hebrew at the University of Vienna. He died in 1552.
