A kút neve, valamint a rajta látható címer készíttetőjére, Berényi Zsigmond püspökre utal. A Pécsi Egyházmegyében a török hódoltság megszűnése után fél évszázad elteltével az ő nevéhez fűződik a papnevelő intézet létrehozása. A szeminárium alapkövét 1742. június 4-én helyezte el, és 1746. szeptember 4-én szenteli föl Szent Pál tiszteletére. Berényi püspök és a káptalan mintegy háromezer kötetes gyűjteménye képezte az alapját Magyarország első nyilvános könyvtárának, mely 1774-ben nyitotta meg kapuit Pécsett.
