The statue is incredibly powerful. It depicts a guardian angel holding the world (symbolizing a weak and seemingly peaceful Hungary that was unable to fend for itself) being attacked by an extremely large and vicious black eagle (Nazi Germany) and is meant to show that Germany Took over and committed the atrocities during WW2. History says that Hungary supported the Nazi's and thus huge controversy for those that want Hungary to acknowledge their part in it and take responsibility. I'm no historian, I wasn't there. So I can't comment on the historical accuracy of the claims. But I do think it's inadvertently caused more talk and dialogue than any accurate statue could have created. So I think that it created exactly what a rememberence statue should have done. Even though the Hungarian civilians want it torn down.

Memorial and fountain, it is really nice to talk a walk around the area, beautiful park, watching the fountain and the people playing around it during the summer days.

I recently visited Liberty Square and the very controversial memorial for the victims the German occupation. The square is very nice, even has a statue of Ronald Reagan, but the intriguing part is the daily or weekly march where decendents of Hungarian Jewish holocaust victims end in front of the memorial and lay artifacts of their lost family members. They leave shoes, suitcases, clothes, glasses....very personal reminders to those who were forced into the concentration camps, etc. Someone was kind enough to have left an explanation for the personal effects in English and Hungarian.

Nice place to be with kids. Especially, on hot summer days. Tip: Fountain is automatically shutting down when standing close.

Absolutely unacceptable way to white wash Hungarian participation in the killing of thousands upon thousands of Hungarian Jews during WWII. In front of this monument is a Civilian Protest Against Monument Falsifying History and it is tastefully, thoughtfully done. The descendants of Hungarian Jews sent to death by their own have left tokens, artifacts, personal items and the stories of their loved ones to show how Hungary participated in the heinous acts of WWII. If you visit, read their stories. See their faces. Remember them. Hungary was not innocent.

Good to be visited by tourists, students and even families with kids. This is an easily accessible park. This is at Liberty Square. They have narratives in English and Hungarian on the items left there and what they symbolize.
