Monument to Count Istvan Tisza (1861-1918), the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Hungary, who was killed by Hungarian soldiers, deserted from the front under the eyes of his wife just because he was the adherent of Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy. Sigmund Freud wrote about Count Tisza murder "I was certainly no adherent of the ancient regime, but it seems doubtful to me whether it is a sign of political shrewdness to beat to death the smartest of the many counts (Count István Tisza) and to make the stupidest one (Count Mihály Károlyi) president". Interesting. Worth a quick visit. Count Tisza was prime Minister and assassinated in 1918.

Count Istvan Tisza (1861 –  1918) was a Hungarian politician, prime minister, political scientist, international lawyer, macroeconomist, and member of Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The prominent event in his life was Austria-Hungary's entry into the First World War when he was prime minister for the second time. A few days before the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, which resulted in World War I. Tisza as Prime Minister supported a strong stand against Serbia. However, after the assassination he was against going to war against Serbia, a rare view in Austria-Hungary. He knew the army's strength, and he was afraid that with the increase of more Slavic territories the equilibrium inside the monarchy would be upset. Moreover, he was afraid that Romania would attack Transylvania. The loss of the alliance with the German Empire would have meant the end of Austria-Hungary as a Great Power, so he gave in and supported the War. He then became a relentless supporter of the war until its end. He was later assassinated in 1918 - the same day that Hungary terminated its political union with Austria. Tisza supported the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary and was representative of the then liberal-conservative consent. The Tisza statue that now graces Kossuth Square is a reproduction of the statue that was erected in 1934 and that was damaged during World War II.  (The 5m tall István Tisza was not damaged, but his later “admirers” toppled it and not surprisingly the new regime after 1945 did not restore it.)  The reconstructed Tisza monument was unveiled in 2014. The statue is monumental, and here the word “monumental” does not imply greatness. On the contrary, artistically speaking the general consensus is that it is a singularly  worthless, if not outright hideous, work of overwhelming size –17 m. tall  with a huge lion on top. It is the work of György Zala, who created the original Archangel Gabriel statue on Heroes’ Square.
