Odafenn is adódtak problémák, még feleségétől is elbúcsúzhatott ha nem sikerülne a küldetés; de azokat a hibákat orvosolta, s végül a vezetőség mégis engedélyezte a korábbi visszatérést. Az automatika hibájából manuális landolást hajtott végre, jól sikerült a kabin pozicionálása is a légkörbe való visszatéréshez; ám a lassítóernyők összegabalyodtak s így közel 700km/h-s sebességgel csapódott a földbe... A további küldetéseket ideiglenesen felfüggesztették, földi maradványát a Кремль oldalában helyezték végső nyugalomra.
As the designated cosmonaut of the СОЮЗ-1, Komarov sacrificed his life for Soviet space exploration and did not resign despite the flaws discovered; thus saving the life of the reserve Gagarin.
