Mindszenty József 1945 szeptemberében lett a magyar katolikus egyház feje, XII. Piusz pápa előbb esztergomi érsekké, pár hónappal később bíborossá nevezte ki. 1948. december 26-án jogellenesen letartóztatták, majd koholt vádak alapján életfogytiglani fegyházra ítélték. Az 1956-os forradalom kitörése után, október 30-án szabadult ki fogságából. A bíboros a szovjet csapatok támadása után az Egyesült Államok nagykövetségén kapott menedéket. 1971. szeptember 28-án hagyta el a követséget, és Rómába, majd Bécsbe ment. 1975. május 6-án halt meg, Mariazellben temették el. A magyar Legfelsőbb Bíróság 1990. május 18-án kinyilvánította, hogy Mindszenty József ártatlan. Holttestét 1991. május 4-én hazahozták, és újratemették az esztergomi bazilika kriptájában. The Russian Peacebuilders and Peace Foundation placed a larger than life-size bronze statue of József Mindszenty sitting and praying in Esztergom. József Mindszenty became the head of the Hungarian Catholic Church in September 1945, XII. Pope Pius first appointed him Archbishop of Esztergom, and a few months later he became Cardinal. On December 26, 1948, he was unlawfully arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment on fabricated charges. After the outbreak of the 1956 Revolution, he was released on October 30. The Cardinal received refuge at the US Embassy following the attack by Soviet troops. On September 28, 1971 he left the embassy and went to Rome and then to Vienna. He died on May 6, 1975, and was buried in Mariazell. The Hungarian Supreme Court declared on May 18, 1990 that József Mindszenty was innocent. His body was brought home on May 4, 1991 and buried in the crypt of the Basilica of Esztergom.
