In one of the beautiful squares of the Buda Castle District, at the foot of the Mary Magdalene Tower, next to the Military History Museum. Beautiful part of town!

St. John of Capistran Thoman Burgkmair: St. John of Capistran was an Italian theologian, a Franciscan monk. who was born on June 24, 1386, in the territory of the Kingdom of Naples, Capestrano. His death occurred on October 23, 1456 (at the age of 70) in the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary, Újlak. It should be known in his honor that his holiday is October 23 and is one of the Patron Saints of Hungary, as well as the camp pastors. St. John of Capistrano in Latin Giovanni da Capestrano (Capestrano, June 24, 1386 - Újlak, October 23, 1456) Italian theologian, preacher, itinerant preacher, inquisitor, recruiter of the Hungarian Crusaders (1456), the Catholic Church He is considered the patron saint of the Hungarian Military Ordinariate. It was erected on the occasion of the 465th anniversary of Capistran's death and on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Order of St. Francis in Hungary. Base of limestone, 250 cm, the statue of bronze 300 cm. In Kapistrán, in the depiction of the statue, he monitors the fighters in a monk's robe, with an apostolic cross flag on his right, a Hungarian horn crawling on the bastion at his feet, and a fallen Turkish with a ponytail flag in his hand. The inscription on the full base of the pedestal can be read: 'KAPISTRÁN', below / 'You have broken the endangerment on the stone walls of Nádor / Our holy leader will convince our present enemies' It was cast from a patriotic feeling by the workers of the MÁV Machine Factory on the occasion of the seven-hundredth anniversary of the Friends in 1921. The famous architect Ernő Foerk designed a particularly simple pedestal for the composition, which was considered extremely moving. The bastion-like finish of the roughly machined pedestal, carved from limestone, also fits well with the bronze work in its mood. The Italian preacher John Kapistrán was consecrated a saint in 1690. You can read more about his life at the attached link. He was patterned by the sculptor József Dankó, and in 1921 he was cast in bronze by the MÁVAG foundry. Based on the surviving data, Damkó modeled the main character from the newspaper writer István Lendvay.

Admittedly, monuments in all variations, colors and shapes in every square, no matter how small, are a special trademark of the city. Some are pretty like the Sisi statue on Elisabethenplatz, others are less successful and only the least honored heads or events really tell people something.

In the heart of Buda Castle, at the Military History Museum, is this beautiful and special monument on Kapistrán Square!
