The grand old Budapest metro 1 line (the oldest one in mainline Europe). It’s old and rattling and occasionally the screech of ancient brakes can damage your hearing but it has a quaintness and beauty of its own. Especially the tile work and signage.

Watch these guys at the market. Complete rip off - 26 euro for one small dish and water. Pity that they look to take advantage of tourists!

While you’re in Budapest, don’t miss out the oldest subway system in continental Europe! Opened 1896, it offers a unique flair and architecture. Included in the standard public transportation tariffs (72h/…).

Before Christmas there is a little "Xmas Market" on the square. You can buy muled wine/apple juice with cinnamon, traditional hungarian cuisine like stuffed cabbage rolls, all kind of sausages and meet, lángos, kürtôs kalács, etc. Also crafted goods. If you visit during the week be sure to arrive around 7PM or earlier because when I was there around 9PM, most of the boutiques were closed .

UNESCO World Heritage metro! Very cute and nostalgic. You should try this yellow line!

The first station on the old M1 line in Budapest. Pretty old station with all the 1896 attire still around. Make sure you know which side to go into as the only exits are to the ground

A must do experience whilst in Budapest. These tiny underground trains rattle along the yellow line, which was completed in the late 1800s - making it the oldest electrified underground in Europe. The stations along this line are all beautifully tiled in white and brown.
